Online Databases

We are pleased to provide our Mater Dei students with access to the following online databases. Online databases should be used for academic searches over general search engines.
 
Current Mater Dei students and teachers will find the usernames and passwords for the following databases on Canvas through the Library tab (access from the left-hand menu of any Canvas course).
[Teachers, please ensure that the Library tab is accessible from your Canvas course (Settings => Navigation=> move Library up). Passwords will no longer be available here.]
 
ABC-CLIO - Connects students, scholars, teachers, and researchers with credible, vetted, and curated collections of primary sources, expert perspectives, and reference material on essential subjects in U.S. history and government, world history, geography, and a range of multicultural and popular culture disciplines. This product contains 6 different databases: World History, World Religions, US History, US Government, Issues (similar to Opposing Viewpoints) and Pop Culture (Eras by decade from 1900-present).

EBSCO (Academic Search Complete) - Provides full-text journals, magazines and other valuable resources that cover academic disciplines such as biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, psychology, theology, humanities and more. With its comprehensive content, ASP is an excellent database for general searching.

BRITANNICA SCHOOL - Offers up-to-date and age-appropriate information resources like encyclopedia articles, multimedia sources, primary sources, games, and other learning resources that support student research.

GALE: OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS IN CONTEXT - Covers social issues, from laws and politics and health and medicine to society and culture and business and economics. This cross-curricular research database includes pro/con viewpoints, reference articles, interactive maps, infographics, and more. Informed, differing views help learners develop critical-thinking skills and draw their own conclusions.

GALE: STUDENT RESOURCES IN CONTEXT - Delivers cross-curricular content that promotes and reinforces critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation. Content covers a wide range of topics and academic disciplines and provides full-text newspapers and periodicals, images, videos, and audio selections.

BRITANNICA IMAGEQUEST - Provides us with nearly 3 million rights-cleared images from more than 45 of the best collections in the world. Provides one of the best and broadest collections of proprietary educational imagery. PLEASE USE INSTEAD OF GOOGLE IMAGES.

Gale Virtual Reference Library Gale Virtual Reference Library is a database of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research.

Worldbook Encyclopedia This magnum opus is made up of three distinct sections: World Book Online Reference Center (25,000 encyclopedia articles plus thousands of additional reference articles, technology tutorials, photographs, maps, videos, animations, and audio clips), World Book Online Info Finder (with over 40,000 encyclopedia and reference articles, biographies, multimedia collections, geography resource guides, web links, and research tools), and World Book Online for Kids (with easy-to-read articles, images, illustrations, interactive maps, and teacher resources)

Daily Life Through History This is a combination of three rich databases from ABC-CLIO that provide a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary resource that supports history, social studies, English, and language students. Daily Life Online moves seamlessly from past to present, providing context for contemporary life and culture
 
LITERATURE RESOURCE CENTER  Find up-to-date biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on more than 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world, supplemented by the scholarly materials of the Scribner Writers Series and Twayne's World, U.S., and English Authors Series.
 
Health and Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module Provides instant access to carefully compiled and trusted medical reference materials. Includes nearly 400 health/medical journals, hundreds of pamphlets, over 700 health-related videos from partner Healthology, Inc., and articles from 2,200 general interest publications in addition to a broad collection of Gale reference titles. Material contained in this Resource Center is intended for informational purposes only.
