Qualifying Test Information

Course Placement and Electives

Qualifying Exam Information:

 

Students who are not placed in desired classes as a result of the Entrance Exam have the opportunity to take subject-specific qualifying exams. 

 

English

Students who have automatically been placed in Honors English based upon grades and Entrance Exam have been notified and do not need to test. 

HSPT Requirements for unconditional Honors English I Placement:

Must meet ALL three criteria
- Composite score: 85+
- Reading score: 10+

- Language score: 10+

 

Each year, the English Department offers College Prep students the opportunity to test into the Honors program for the following year. The opportunities to take the Qualifying Exam are below. The exam takes about 1 hour to complete. There will be a $20 test fee payable by cash (exact change) or check for each exam. Please arrive 15 minutes before your exam time and bring two #2 pencils.

Mathematics
If you are interested in learning more about your student's 4-year Math pathway, or have questions about your student's Math placement please CLICK HERE.

FAQ:

  • Requirements for Honors classes from the HSPT: 9.6+ for Honors Algebra 1. 
  • All other Honors levels will be placed after the student takes a qualifying exam. Please see dates below. 
  • All incoming Freshmen are placed in one of our three levels of Algebra I, a course that provides a solid foundation for success in future Math courses at Mater Dei. 
  • Mater Dei’s Algebra I is a preparatory high school course that differs from middle school level Algebra I. 
  • Math placement is evaluated each year and students have an opportunity to move to a higher level if they meet the requirements.

World Languages 
Has your student studied American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Latin or Spanish before? Is your student a native Spanish speaker?* If your student has studied any of the above-mentioned languages, we invite your student to take the World Language Qualifying Exam.

*Si su estudiante habla y escribe español, le invitamos a que tome el examen para calificar en la clase de español bilingüe.

Registration deadline:. Late registration and walk-ins will not be accepted. There will be a $20 test fee, due the day of the exam, payable by cash (exact change) or check made out to Mater Dei High School. Please arrive 15 minutes before your exam time and bring two #2 pencils. The exam takes about an hour to complete.

If your student has no prior language study, please disregard this form. You will choose your language and other electives on the elective choice form.
