okay oh yeah I get tired everytime I hear some thank you so much where is Fallon thank you for that beautiful prayer I'm going to start crying before I even get started so I'll just have firest menopausal woman not a good combination but I want to know that I use my slides to cheat so I will be looking back behind myself to see what's going on back there but and all the data from tonight is pictures oh my gosh who is that it's me in the summer of 1981 shortly after I grow winter from modern day we went off to the Calgary Stampede in this picture was taken there and I was saying to my sister Erin why did I ever think I was fat back in the day girls think they were and those braces yet Dad paid for those and I remember when I was at Mater Dei thinking the worst thing ever I went off Notre Dame with those braces and at the end of my first semester and got them removed came back from Christmas Vacation no braces smiling away notice there are they were this was the pictures taken in the ridiculous outfits that we were for some I saw this because really when I think that's my time at Mater Dei it's largely about my time as a tall flag girl I'm as part of the band my friend Cheryl is here tonight and they were an even funnier hot than mine back in the day I'm here's another picture of us this was when we did our indoor competitions and this picture was taken at and that we won one day I was driving home in this concert in this costume to see if I can point myself out here  my laser pointer will anyway on I'm the one with the trophy and I was driving home in this costume and actually had a car accident with somebody who thought that he had been rear-ended by an alien these are these were the good old days on here's a picture that I really wanted to see her because I think for so many of us at Mater Dei that it just our time here but our parents as well some of the people in the room might be able to pick out some of these parents who were always with us and if you were somebody was involved in for Terra Mater Dei or even an academic clubs I know that you had parents like this that meant a lot to you too some of you may know on one of the people in this picture which is Miss we knew her as Miss Mel B is she still miss Mel B designs and scary and tricks and and she brought in art offline code when Hamilton and his Nowlin St though and still friend of mine I'm and I I just saw in the summer and I said wow you know we were so afraid of you when you first started the coaches and she was like 19 of the time I say this to remind all of us and these these teachers and people that we connected with turn water to so special to us I'm sure somebody else that was super special to me and that's me in my prom dress from the gunny sacks Outlet I was rocking spaghetti strap that's my my date Harry with his dad's really big white Cadillac that we are allowed to use on night and I was showing those pictures to my son the other day and he remarked on Terry's tails and I told him about how poor Carrie I mean if you ran high school in the eighties your date had to always mad play rifles on their 3rd and the little typing on their tuxedo to your dresses and I frequently wore pink so the poor guy frequently had sex either pictures with what are my best friends in high school  thirsty my sister Erin he frequently stats like that on the grass he was a leader of Health Labs to shortly after me and thank you for coming that means a lot I like the socks with this just because I like to get to know the people in the room too so we're going to my patent said SmackDown now at this point just so we can get to know each other a little bit better I already think I know who going to win the prize for the newest Saints and not the person who has the youngest baby in the room usually and so I haven't actually have a prize does anybody have a baby that's older than one day old  come here really for your wife but it's a copy of my first book number for you're our most insane Saints I have one high school student right now this is a copy of my Advent booklet for your family men's away this year I know it's brand-new I barely have it high school students I'm I'm on my 7th year of it right now and I know a lot of moms in the room that have lived through parenting alone you have any advice for me stay afterwards I want our wisest thing I want to know who has the most children and grandchildren I'm not counting great-grandchildren so do the numbers in your head how many grandchildren  so you get your scores 14 can anybody beat 14 okay he's are why is this thing yay and mrs. Lee son Christopher actually was my arch rival at st. Barbara school he was the smartest boy and Christian Lee and I were always on the smack down for. In the bath spelling bee and honor cast and stuff like that so I'm asking who's in the room but I was baptized in 1963 what anybody baptized before me okay I'm I'm just calling you cuz you've already went but what you're choosing anybody before 1940 1930 you're not even trying to tell her for it cuz you already know that you're just a sprain 2nd 1930 I like to find this out because I always say like if something happens to me during the talk and I feel over then it's your response what is Mike on and give the rest of the talk for me so you're in charge if something happens to me so can I park really is going to focus on two things I'm going to talk a little bit about things because I love them but before that I want to talk about the climate in which were raising our children who plays Danny in and it's part of what we said we would do with this and I want to just share some numbers with you I'm going to scoop back over here so I can go over these with you the climate that our kids are growing up in his dramatically shifting from that which we knew when we were in high school I'm in for that some of the worst people on the room I am you know remarkably different Bulls in terms of the church and technologically a few numbers to look at her and who identify themselves as Catholic and the most recent study done by the center for apostolate research in the apostolate 25% of the United States adult identifying themselves as Catholic and one-third of those who were raised Catholic no longer describe themselves as Catholic and this next one really what you need to look at it kind of hard to see from where you're sitting but are the yellow and green portions which tell us how frequently people are attending mass and you can see that on the morning after 1981 the majority are not frequently attending mass and fast only 17% attend Mass once a week or more so Mass attendance and even among those self identify as Catholic dramatically shifting at this point I'm in the most recent studies 23% of those identify Salsa's Catholic attend Mass weekly and we can look around ourselves and see a world war raising kids where you know soccer game shopping on Sunday afternoon football practice all kinds of activities being scheduled we all have lots of great excuses I'm and yet it's good to know that this is the culture you know even within those who are self-identifying is Catholic and 6 out of every 10 Catholics are red in Paris I just like to see a show of hands if you're registered in your Parish if they actually have a piece of paper that has your name on it but they weren't we're part of a shifting minority and it's interesting there's a college that I work with and Texas and that Texas A&M University play have the audacity to say that they have more Catholics at Texas A&M then we have a Notre Dame very large Catholic population there and their student Paris St Marys ministers to this very large populations they realized with their students that they need to find a new way to reach out to them that the kids were coming but didn't have a way to communicate with them they weren't doing things like putting their envelopes in the basket and none of them had a registered so they actually how the test text messaging Drive to have kids and bring their cell phones and register in the parish by packs their registration rolls triples in one weekend when they did this so Ministry into a population whose world is far different from not that we grew up in and that is a paradigm shift for the church we need to find new and different ways talk to them and I was really happy today that Mark Zuckerberg had a press conference and I always have to update my slides every time he has one and he had one today announcing the 1 billionth user on Facebook so a billion of us using as very popular social media site and raise your hand if you're Facebook  I hope most of us are friends and I've got on their old nest by my children is every good mom. but I found out actually. It's a fantastic phenomenal place for Ministry in the new evangelization and I'll talk a little bit more about that that the median Facebook agents reported today drop from 23 to 22 years old and so these numbers and account for the fact that what does anybody know the minimum age to use to legally new Facebook 1313 so if the median age is 22 turn that there's some Grandma's in the room that are using Facebook and we know that there are an awful lot of very young kids registered on Facebook and he did actually Tom Hanson has talked today about the fact that China is not yet using Facebook so a billion without China and if you can imagine you know the world that were living in I'm in how wired and we all are  37% of 10 + 12 - 17 using video chat when I High School senior at Mater Dei I used to sit on the floor in my bedroom for hours talking to Terry on the telephone we all did that back then and now I watch my son best friend lives in Oregon early uses their phone to actually talk they use it more for texting I'm 80% of the kids in this age demographic are doing not working in a send an average of 60 text messages per day and 31% of them have their own smartphones for good fake on well you know we were lucky to have the old rotary dial that we shared between five kids and only 52% of those who ha what's at the technology actually have rules about it so if your parents out there in the room who's parenting a teen or a grandmother of a teen I'm think about what turn the restrictions on your home for the use of Technology I'm just a little bit more at some other numbers that we're talking for a little bit dated and their friends by the Kaiser Family Foundation but those bars there which represent then the dark purple are the difference between 2000 and 4 2009 and they found back in 2009 way before social networking but as prevalent as it is now that teams in this demographic between turn 18 years old were engaging in 10 hours and 45 minutes per day of media Euston how is that humanly possible they so they're on the computer while they're watching TV while they're listening to the radio while they're texting and they the average can an hour and 35 minutes per day of text messaging and there wasn't even a number collected for that back in 2004 and again star 2009 statistics the last time that this was done so just a little bit about for using social media and again I think that the church has really recognize that this is a critical tool and that understanding it going to be vital to communicating not just to the future of our church but to our church right now and I'm really hurting too as a blogger and somebody that's active in social media this phone actually invited to come out to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops are having a meeting specifically for bloggers on the first day of their meeting they've write a handful of us to come out and said by the bit that and it's it's really exciting for me to see that Dave and praise the technology in that they understand the tool that that's can be for the new evangelization and you know one of the churches that they're emulating themselves after with respect to Communications can anybody guess another another large religion very popular in the United States that's very active in new and social media  the Mormon church I'm if you look at any Catholic website that actually have advertising on it or if you watch a Catholic video on YouTube You'll quite frequently see in the related videos on the right hand side on YouTube videos that have been created by members of the Church of Jesus Saturday specifically targeting Catholic audiences with their media message so now that you're aware of that pay attention to say that you know we're trying to compete with on or whatever but we recognize that I'm this is a trend within the church that we're aiming to serve and that these are new in hiding places in an admission field. I'm largely untapped within the church these are some of the rules that I think we're created by a group called voices for life on and I think that in a world where we talk about cyberbullying and then it's important that we all recognize new social media in a way that sets with the ethos of the Catholic church so here's some suggestions for that and cyberbullying it's not something that we knew when we were here at Mater Dei I am I'm sure that anybody in the in the room who ministers to support students nose what a growing Trend this is on and what at what a difficult thing it is to tap into exactly how we come a problem a lot of these issues that we're dealing with we're inventing answers right now to how we how we serve kids in this way and one last piece of Statistics that I want to show you is this one and that's the game comes from the Pew forum for internet research and name the question overall when your experience are people your age mostly kind or mostly I'm kind to one another on social networking sites and I answer that for yourself would you say that in your interaction people are mostly kind I'm I think it would be a different answer right now in the months leading up to the election I'm I'm pretty sure that right now and there's a lot of unkind talking on these places and you'll see the kids I'm 69% of those surveyed did say that people were mostly kind and they're growing up in a world where you know they're far more willing to boy a skinny high school girl our age and we hated having her picture taken I was I was surprised to find pictures of myself I hated it and and and our teams you know they're with their smartphones they love staring in these new and exciting ways so a few strategies for us parents and if you're somebody who's parenting chains and if you haven't already thought about strategies for media and your home now it's a time to do it I might say my sister Erin who has a third grader Gardener is having to deal with us at an even younger age than those of us who have high school student you know her sons have access to the internet now and then are you school and while they're not social networking they are you know I'm engaging in a lot of use of technology and media in their home so a few rules the first no consoling be in the position of prayer and when I sit down to work everyday the first thing that I do is to release I have my morning prayer routine right there at my computer and it might sound a little bit funny but right now I've actually got us a statue of St Michael the Archangel they're at my computer with me is my companion and some of the wickedness and snares of the devil that are going on these days online and I skylights to that understanding I'm used to be via and praying about it is important to express to my son's that there prices online is there online resume that they put up on Facebook may be visible to their friends are the people that they permit I'm very ality isn't anything that hits there should be something that really represents the person that they want to be sending that one day would be proud to see to have there birthday to have their teacher see their priests they or their future wife see on that's what they're creating and their presents there I'm all for letting them have access to technology but I'm very concerned about balance and their life and oversight so we have the rule no screens in the bedroom and that means no TV spot if I am definitely the meanest mom around that we keep our open areas of the home and I think he's got younger kids that's really great I'm a great role to go by and I think when I gave the time in the past I used to talk specifically about your privacy settings and how to enable those in your home Facebook just as soon as we figure it out changes it the next day I'm so basically we need to found. It's constantly shifting and that our kids need to be educated that really their privacy is almost know what the things that they put on that anybody can print something out and show it on and they do need to understand their security as well and particularly I think for teenage girls you know so many of them have their cell phone where is an entertaining smartphones that actually report their location quite frequently is so address these things with your teams in your home really I like to look at the amazingly creative things that are being done with technology and if you look at you know if you spend any time on YouTube in the context of the Catholic World you'll see amazingly beautiful messages administering the good news that never would have been awesome when I was the age that the teens are now they're using creative ways and that's the wonderful thing about texting anybody in the room parents and kids who have access to texting right now if they're underage so just to talk about this and this is their new paradigm and definitely talk with them about safety issues with respect to texting keeping it in its proper priority definitely here's the big thing that I need to say to myself Practice What You Preach because you know you reach down there for 2 seconds is there a cell phone how many people have had near accident because you were texting while driving and so it's not fair for me to say it don't do it don't do it and then be checking my email while I'm driving so we really need to with all of this be practicing what we're preaching cuz I'm a little turn on timer going to jump now into the Steely portion of the talk and I just want to talk for just a moment about the year of faith that we're coming up to I think probably here Mater Dei or getting ready to do some exciting things that your faith is actually even longer than a year we have a couple of donuts but it's actually beginning on October 11th Holy Father Benedict XVI has called for a year or two to celebrate the documents of Vatican to reinforce our learning of of the catechism and what it means to us and to really embrace the message that we preach when we pray and Proclaim our Creed I'm so you'll see churches all around and bracing the era faith and special things are probably going to be going on here at the school I think it's a really great time to recognize our own very nice to your faith I'm really to see the fact that you and I are Saints in the making I wake up and usually by the time I've been awake for about half an hour I've increased my Purgatory time and yet I have great confidence that that my job is to be a saint in the making and to help my still on their pasta Saint had to part of my daily prayer time every day it's been reading the daily scriptures and if you got some **** today you saw that we were reading friends end of Luke chapter 10 and it's the so often to me an uncanny how scripture can fit into your day and when you really stop and look at what the gospel have to say to you each day and I frequently go okay God you sent this just for me today didn't you but this way the line on today go on your way be holding you like Lambs Among Wolves and this is again the climate that were are we're sending our kids out into on Lambs Among Wolves I'm in yet at the same time I have great hope for not just the future church but the church as it is right now with these beautiful lambs and you know especially as someplace like modern-day where the faith is vibrant and so so live so wonderfully that we're equipping them to go out there and to the world and I titled to talk Saints first blacker's and speakers and Sinners and whenever I have research to do and I go to one of my finest full of research assistants and that's my Facebook friend the three categories and these are some of the people that they came up with and Slackers and I'm not calling these people Slackers but I'm just telling you if you're in need steal a companion to walk with you in an intercessory relationship if you're a slacker like I am a few intercessors that you might consider Mary of Bethany now what was she known for anybody what did Jesus say so for those of us who may find ourselves as blacker's you know and this is a good reminder to me when I really pick the time I need to each day to put into the prayer time and that that wow my to do list maybe getting pushed back a little bit and there's no better way for me to start my day then in the presence of Jesus Christ in my prayer time another one how can I even call her a slacker she's one of my favorite saints rows of leaves you frequently about her little way I'm in the fact that her pop the heaven you know was made up of little acts of Love offered with a heart that was so beautiful and that she wanted to do everything in her life and as a gift for Christ and she's definitely not a slacker but for those of us who know for whom the Apple Store with things like dirty dishes and poopy diapers you know. Just like saying her up and and she's a great role model this one was recommended by my friend Captain job he's an airplane airline pilot and he has a special Devotion to st. Joseph Cupertino who was renowned for being so in love with God that he frequently elevated miraculously during his prayer times where's the picture of him praying and flying at the same time is that the patron saint of airline pilot and also along with being the patron as airline pilots is also the patron of poor students he was such a bad student that he actually was not admitted Mayo on Seminary and had to really battle to attain his priesthood I'm so for students who really struggle and Saint Joseph of Cupertino can be a really good friend it looks like a some same first Seekers I think this first one was a very funny suggestion from one of my Facebook friends Saint Lucie what do we know about St Lucie  yeah she actually I'm with the victim of having her eyes torn out of her head this is one of the least gory pictures I can find them I'm at  he was recommended by my Facebook friend Lisa who said I'm so often blind to see my God has for me in my life and then I walked through my life you know looking for signs from him and yet ignore the beautiful children that he's placed in my home or the placed over my head I'm so Lucy as a great example for those of us who have spiritual blindness in our life who for whom is he nuts of everyday life clouds our perspective on the world could fit into all three categories partially a slacker I'm in most notably a speakers on if you know a Jesuit and you know they tell really good books about those but they're always in search of the truth and Saint Ignatius of Loyola at the original Judge Dredd at Miss a great Patron for speakers st. Teresa benedicta of the Cross does anybody know her name before she was a religious sister  right I'm I brought you on purpose you know so you can answer all the questions eat it's fine and born into became an atheist fairly young in life live that way Perry song through an academic career ardently ardently opposed to organized religion and yet have the opportunity to read the autobiography of lava lantern lights at her life that night I'm in C actually became not only a Catholic but shortly thereafter devoted herself to the religious life I'm she died in a concentration camp on her writings are absolutely beautiful and she talks about that search for truth and life I'm an infant to come out at are not only an atheistic prospective but that of an academician really a speaker somebody in search of the truth and she found it good news of the Gospel so she's a great stain for speakers and less now you can probably make this a Mary Magdalene despite went to written about her and certain best-selling novels and is one who was so devoted to Christ and and we know that Steve went through her fair share of ups and downs and her own life and yet she gave her all and to follow his way I said she's a great example you know little kids are often looking for once Barren life same business he was known as the good thief I'm crucified next to Christ on the cross turns am and ask for forgiveness at that very last moment of his life and was granted it was told I hate would one day be in heaven with Christ if there's hope for someone like that at the very last minute There's Hope for you and I that even though we wake up and mess up every day we can be there soon another sinner I think she was falsely accused and it was in the end proven she's the first ordained country of Australia St Mary mackillop of the cross a religious sister who founded schools all over Australia and quite interesting Lee got into a run-in with her bissap he did not like her not like what she was doing did not like her growing popularity and benster told her you not allowed to teach you are not allowed to function as a religious sister we got really now and maybe go behind his back and see remained obedient to his mandate and shortly before his death. play I'm recanted his criticism of her bed apologize to her and asked her to go back into active Ministry and now she's the first canonized Saint country of Australia does anybody recognize them  anybody baby can I show you this picture  St Francis that's how we usually see him right with the birds out bouncing the patron saint who causes all Catholic school children to bring their animals to school on October 4th that's a real highlight no matter what Catholic School I heard my nephew's Tim pictures of their goldfishes to school and  when I was looking for pictures of it you know most of them are like why do I call Saint Francis the same first a nurse and he was born in a very privileged family he let a pretty Rowdy lifestyle intelli on personal conversion actually that the way from The Riches of his family and so angered his father and then his father disinherited him and you chose to give his life to Christ and and it's really interesting when you read the stories of wives Saints are depicted in art the way the were we recognize this I don't think he would ever this clean because he lived basically as a prior to founding the friends of order of preachers on NBC really was a minimalist to believe in living on Union with all all facets of God's creation you know a little dears tiptoeing us and that really set the original on person who was into things like ecology I'm because he believed that every facet of God's creation as a gift I am this picture on the right is later in his life and he actually receive the signs of the stigma stigmata prior to his death and suffered and physically and emotionally with those five marks of Christ on his body uniting his suffering too I'm in it's a good reminder to me that he made such a transition in his life from somebody who had a life you know really that was very Chrissy is somebody who gave it all up and didn't just do that for himself but surrounded himself with with others who wanted to give their life that way too he's his own you know for being this amazing founder of the friends is going to order and also of the poor Clare Clarewood tremendously devoted to him and religious sisters all over the world have that friends within devotion and and so what does this end. Of his life he was so hurt by the fact that order that he had created around them was really struggling with you know they they were going out in preaching and many of them were finding tremendous exhausting it and they were becoming worldly in their own way and so just like you and play in a world where you know we're in there such constant scrutiny for you to be successful and to be famous and all this and he's a great role look for Austin in dealing with you know the time in which we live understanding our blessings trying to live as simply as we can and being a light to other and knowing that at the same time it's going to cause us some suffering along the way and are we ready to embrace that suffering and in are we preparing our kids for the leaving of their homes the leaving of a place like modern day and going out into a world that will challenge them in every way and we know that you know the way that we're living as people of faith is countercultural these days and they are going to face term challenges I'm a few things for the Year of Faith and they've actually nominated a different thing for every month and then  how to keep your too long so I'll go pretty quickly through these but this is one of my favorites and he's in the month of May and 2013 st. Damien of Molokai what it what do we know in for and threaten right up there he serves the lepers on Molokai and I like the soda this picture and then this one which was actually a photograph that was taken shortly before his death of Hansen's Disease play a contracted it on for himself and inside of it but went happily to his grave knowing that he had lived a life that was so given and such love for us to other people and while his while his external visit is not a beautiful woman with a beautiful heart he had inspired shortly after I'm I'm already calling her stmary and so actually be formally canonize later this month her life will be celebrated in turn up 2013 knowing we came at Franciscan sister when the Bishops and in Molokai were asking for people to come and serve the lepers and nobody would come and yet she brought her order and she said and sisters were going there all the sis spot to his crazy and didn't really want to go but went out of obedience she told them do not fear because we are not going to lose anyone and we will institute standards that by the way this disease is treated and not only did they minister to people they also revolutionize the Healthcare Systems in Hawaii such that we now know it has Hansen's Disease and treatable disease not one of those sisters was lost to the disease and another future saying to became and I very soon I'm Kateri Tekakwitha I'm in other grade and patroness for those that are interested in in Environmental types of causes and this one was new to me so I had to go looking for him he'll be celebrating your from now in October 2013 venerable he thought he was a hairdresser he was a former slave who won his freedom and and to actually made quite a lot money doing people's hair on use that to serve the people who were Indigent in his community and the last one that I want to mention my good friend 11 Fulton St how many of you guys watch them on TV when you were growing up he's in the process for canonization and Erin and I just about a month ago were here in the Diocese of Peoria with Bishop Jenky I'm at the NASA celebration and honor of his elevation venerable and he's along the path to canonization to another great and he will be the first male american-born Saint when he I believe he will be canonized and part of that is because of this family right here last story that I'm going to tell you this is the angstrom family and we met them because they family that's living in Peoria and we know that along with life of great to see what's required to become canonized as a saint Miracles yes and this is a family was very devoted to then Archbishop Fulton Sheen play angstrom the lady on the right there when into labor with the little boy that she's holding on her lap not the little not the smallest one on Perez but this one is an inference born on last minute at their home after a pretty normal pregnancy healthy pregnancy I'm born on too quickly to get taken to the hospital so Mom delivered at home born without a pulse  when catapults for 61 minutes paramedics were called to the home Dad and mergency baptized Little James Fulton because they didn't think he was going to is transported to the hospital right as the doctors were prepared to call his desk and he resuscitated and after being say 1 minutes without a pulse is now this very active two-year-old who is there an **** with us that day I'm his cause for his Miracle as we believe it to be I miss being studied now by the Vatican I'm in support of pause the canonization of Archbishop Fulton Sheen because the story was happening mom was praying and I don't know what I know I certainly would have had the presence of mind Shannon and Devotion to Archbishop Fulton Sheen and immediately began praying to him for his intersection with the baby who's now this normal boy all the way along the family has been told you know he'll have brain damage I'll Never Walk he won't be able to go to school he's every bit a crazy radical two year old but this family also I think if this happens to me I'd be like wow that's my family were really cool we're in math and if you can notice the Dad what's he wearing a t-shirt what's because well Babies R Us had a blowout poopy diaper on dad in the middle of the machine massive tree do you know what this is like this is God telling us you know I'm this is not about our family and this is about celebrating the life of this holy man went before us and then I think things are really actually Saints in the making so if you love the way the night you are going to be on the website of some tools that you can use to get to know them a little bit better and I just want to show you before we finish my things in the making this is son Eric and we went to drop them off at colleges asare he's in Junior at Harvard and he said we got to go get my couch out of storage this is Eric in the in the couch storage rooms 21  my senior this year in high school on I'm looking to find Has Talent alive and um so they're really why I wake up every day and then I know each of you and your lives have have same to me companies to on a few words about how we doing you know how we move forward in this crazy day and age first thing is I think really prioritizing family mass and stewardship as a family and understanding their world and being a rule for then I'm been especially praying with and for them everyday and one of my friends told me when I was struggling with the fact that Eric was going off the collar you know I used to be my job to kneel down next to my kid's dad and pray with them every night and now they're off a colon in my job now does the states men what can I pray bar for you today and so for us who are letting go of kids that might be what we're asking right now to as what can we pray for for you today I want to thank you for your time and tell you that I'll be around and I have my books over there if anybody's interested in the in any of them that also I just went to visit you and I do want you to come visit me in these places I know I'm already Facebook friends with some of the people here but these are some places that you can find me online and I hope that our meeting tonight is actually just the beginning of our friendship and that will be in contact after this and I want to thank you for coming out tonight but especially
