Academic Decathlon is a nationwide program that gives students an opportunity to compete in 10 different academic areas: Mathematics, Science, Language and Literature, Economics, Social Science, Music, Art, Essay, Speech, and Interview. The culmination of the competition is the public Super Quiz event.
Teams are made up of students from the following GPA categories, based on the United States Academic Decathlon GPA guidelines:
Varsity 0.00-3.19
Scholastic 3.20-3.79
Honor 3.80-4.00
Mater Dei competes against 30-45 other teams in the SoCal Region Private Schools Academic Decathlon.
Winners from the competition receive both individual and team medals, and many students have received scholarships to college based on their performance. Students involved in the Academic Decathlon program are enrolled in a UC-approved honors Academic Decathlon course.
