Model United Nations

Model United Nations (MUN)  is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In MUN, students step into the shoes of delegates from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization’s agenda. While playing their roles as delegates, student make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure – all in the interest of mobilizing “international cooperation” to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world.

Before assuming their roles in an MUN simulation, students research the issue that their committee will address. MUN participants learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics including peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development and globalization. Model UN delegates also look closely at the needs, goals, and foreign policies of the countries they will represent at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, culture, economics, and science contribute to the authenticity of the simulation when the committee work gets under way. The delegates’ in-depth knowledge of their countries guarantees a lively and memorable experience.

MD students can participate in MUN by enrolling in courses such as Advanced Placement Human Geography/MUN Honors as freshman, Honors World History/MUN as sophomores, and Honors United States History/MUN as juniors.

Students who prioritize and demonstrate excellence in MUN may enroll in Advanced Placement Comparative Government and Politics/MUN as seniors, and qualify for the Distinction of International Diplomacy Award.

MUN for Middle School Students
Students in grades 5-8 are invited to join us each year at our Monarch Invitational, an MUN conference we host just for middle school students every April.

Students are welcome to attend as individual delegates or as part of a school delegation.

We have committees for all skill levels:

  • Beginner committees for those brand-new to MUN, where we walk delegates through the MUN process in a fun, nurturing environment
  • Novice committees for students who have participated in a conference or have experience with their middle school
  • Intermediate committees are for students who have participated in 2-3 conferences and are confident in their MUN skills
  • Advanced committees are for experienced delegates ready to challenge themselves in a fast-paced environment.

Our 6th Annual Monarch Invitational Middle School and THIMUN MUN Conference is scheduled for Saturday April 24, 2027. Stay tuned for more information; feel free to contact Charisse Kitsinis [email protected] with any questions.
