Recover previous D or F grades by taking our Credit Recovery courses

Credit Recovery courses are offered to Mater Dei students through our online learning program, MD Online. Join us in our supportive online learning environment! Students have much of the scheduling freedom that comes with online coursework along with frequent teacher interaction.

The cost for this program is $300.00* per class, per semester.

Spring 2025 Credit Recovery is available for students currently in grades 10-12.

Who should take Credit Recovery courses?

Students are eligible to take Credit Recovery for any D or F grades earned from previous course enrollments (reflected on transcript).

F grades must be remediated to grades of D or higher prior to graduation.
D grades should be remediated for many reasons, such as: college admissions, readiness for higher-level coursework, GPA.

Who cannot take Credit Recovery?

Current Freshmen cannot take Credit Recovery during the Spring term of their Freshmen year (the first offering of Credit Recovery following Freshmen year is Summer School 2025)
Students who have not yet taken the course cannot take Credit Recovery. If interested in getting ahead, see Summer School for Credit Advancement options.
Students who have earned a grade of C or higher in the course cannot re-take it in Credit Recovery.
At this time, we do not offer Credit Recovery during the Fall term to students who are not already students at Mater Dei High School. We do offer Credit Recovery to non-Mater Dei students through our Summer School.

How many Credit Recovery courses can be taken in one term?

Credit Recovery is offered over the following 3 terms: Fall, Spring, Summer (Summer School)

Fall and Spring Credit Recovery: Sophomores and Juniors may only enroll in 1 semester course without prior approval from their School Counselor and the Director of MD Online. Seniors may enroll for up to 2 semester courses.

Note for planning purposes:

Summer School Credit Recovery: Students may enroll in 3 semester courses in a Summer term (any grade level).

Credit Recovery Policies for Student Success

Online credit recovery courses are rigorous and require dedication and commitment from students. Expectations are the same as for traditional Mater Dei classes.

Students are required to attend the first class meeting to meet their Instructor and establish a plan for starting their work. Students who fail to attend without having provided prior warning will be dropped from the class.
Students are required to complete the on-line class assignments or quizzes by the scheduled due date.
Students may meet with their Instructor during Office Hour times scheduled by their Instructor assistance understanding the material.
Students are required to take all tests in the presence of their Instructor once the assignments and quiz for a specific unit have been completed. The test must be taken before the assignment due date for the Test.
All course work must be completed by the last day of class.

Late Work

If online class assignments and quizzes are not completed by the submission date deadline, the portal may be closed for submission on any particular assignment or quiz.
Students are required to submit class assignments and quizzes for a particular chapter/unit before being permitted to take the chapter/unit test.
Students may work ahead if they wish.

Attendance

Students must be active in the virtual classroom a minimum of 2 days of each week of the class by submitting answers to assignments or by taking an assessment.
Assignments and assessments are due on the date listed by instructor.
Any posts/submissions, regardless of content, will count toward attendance.
Students may be required to meet with their instructor once a week or more frequently depending on progress.
If a student is out of attendance for more than a week without contacting the instructor, the student will be dropped from the class. If this happens, the student will not be eligible to receive credit or earn a letter grade.

Should Credit Recovery be taken during the school year (Fall or Spring) or during Summer School?

Credit Recovery is offered over the following 3 terms: Fall, Spring, Summer (Summer School)

In planning when to take Credit Recovery, here are some considerations:

Current Seniors:
- F grades must be remediated prior to graduation- if needing to remediate F grades, Credit Recovery should be taken in the Fall and/or Spring terms
- D grades should be remediated as soon as possible as they may affect college acceptance
- Seniors may enroll in up to 2 semester courses per term (up to 2 in Fall and 2 in Spring)
- Seniors are welcome to enroll for Summer School in the term immediately following Spring of Senior year, but that would be after the deadlines
Current Sophomores & Juniors:
- Credit Recovery should be taken as soon as possible. Considerations should be made for your current academic schedule. Do you have time to fit in Credit Recovery coursework during the school year? Credit Recovery courses are generally the same amount of work as a regular class.
- If you need to fit in more than one Credit Recovery course in the Fall and/or Spring Credit Recovery terms, please reach out to Mr. Deskovick and your School Counselor for review of your request.
- Keep in mind: up to 3 semester courses can be remediated over the Summer School term.
Current Freshmen:
- Would NOT take Credit Recovery over the Spring 2025 Credit Recovery term. The first offering of Credit Recovery for current Freshmen is Summer School 2025.
- Following Freshmen year, Credit Recovery should be taken as soon as possible. Considerations should be made for your current academic schedule. Will you have time to fit in Credit Recovery coursework during the school year? Credit Recovery courses are generally the same amount of work as a regular class.
  - Keep in mind: up to 3 semester courses can be remediated over the Summer School term.

What does the Credit Recovery schedule look like, along with a student's regular classes?

There are two important components to most* of our Credit Recovery courses:

Online component - Students are provided access to our online learning environment, which is based in Canvas. Students can work on assignments when they fit into their day and teachers provide the pacing to help keep students on track.
In-person support component - Students are assigned to a teacher for 1:1 or small group support. Students meet with their Credit Recovery teachers in-person based on mutual availability to cover challenging topics, to explain instructions, complete assessments, and other topics depending on the type of course. Meetings are scheduled based on mutual availability, but some common times are Office Hours or before or after school. This structure works around students' existing class and activity schedules.

*A few courses, such as upper division Arts, may require more in-person time for studio use.

Why take Credit Recovery through Mater Dei?

Here are some facts about Mater Dei's Credit Recovery:

UC and Cal State approved- our Credit Recovery courses carry the same UC approval and Cal State standards noted in our main Course Catalog
NCAA approved- our Credit Recovery courses carry the same NCAA approval standards noted in our main Course Catalog
Accredited school- Mater Dei High School is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) and is co-accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
If a student remediates a course that was taken at Mater Dei (and was eligible for recovery) and earns a higher grade, this will be reflected in the body of their Mater Dei transcript and factor into their GPA. It is easiest to match Credit Recovery courses with courses taken at the same school.

How does Credit Recovery work on a transcript?

As a parent, how can I support my student while they are enrolled in Credit Recovery?

There are many ways that parents can support:

If you have not already, please bookmark the Aeries portal and plan to check your student's grades at least once a week
You can pair with your student on Canvas to see their assignments and to see that assignments have been submitted. Please click here for step-by-step instructions.
Please ask your student about the times that they will meet with their teacher. Many Credit Recovery classes have a weekly meeting and meetings may be more frequent depending on the type of course and your student's progress. Meetings may be before school, during the school day (Office Hour or lunch), or after school.
You may consider having your student keep a paper planner or calendar during this time. Credit Recovery will add more coursework to their schedule, and this is a good time to have another tool to help them manage it. Planners are available in the Campus Store for purchase.

Is tutoring available to help my student with Credit Recovery?

Yes!

Here are three sources for your student to get help with Credit Recovery (and their current classes) at no extra charge:

Your student's Credit Recovery teacher will hold meetings and will be available to schedule office hour times with your student. Your student should take advantage of time offered by their teacher. The teacher will be the most direct source for help as they understand all of the course content, assignments, and assessments.
Our Academic Assistance Program offers drop-in tutoring for students. Many subjects are available and all tutors are Mater Dei teachers.
1. The 2024-2025 Academic Assistance Program tutoring schedule will be sent out by the school through Parent Square.

*Math courses have an Aleks software subscription fee

Refund policy

Credit Recovery course fees are not refundable after the start of the Credit Recovery term.

Credit Recovery Spring Term 2025 course fees are not refundable after February 10, 2025.

Please note: no refund is given if a student does not attend the first course meeting, or disengages from the course after the first meeting or at any point in the term, or if a student does not earn their desired credit.

If a Credit Recovery class is cancelled by the school, you will receive a refund.
