Monarch of the Month: May 2026 - Owen Shannon

Owen Shannon ’26 chose Mater Dei inspired by family legacy and the opportunity to compete alongside his brother while continuing his development as a student athlete. Since arriving on campus, he has embraced the values of the Monarch community through leadership, service, and a commitment to treating others with kindness and respect.

Before coming to Mater Dei, Owen attended Concordia Elementary, Shorecliffs Middle School, and Serra Catholic School in Rancho Santa Margarita. He is also an active member of St. Edward’s Church in Dana Point.

At Mater Dei, Owen has been a member of the baseball program and previously played football. He has also supported school rallies and has been actively involved in Special Games for three years, taking on increasing leadership responsibilities.

Owen holds a 3.91 GPA and is especially proud of being recognized as an Orange County Athletic Directors Student Athlete of Character, an honor that reflects both his performance and his integrity.

His service has been centered on Special Games, where he progressed from volunteer to leader and, in his senior year, served as a coordinator helping to plan and execute the entire event. Through this experience, he found the greatest impact came from creating a meaningful and joyful day for the participants.

Owen credits Coach Mercado as the most influential figure in his Mater Dei experience, helping shape him both as an athlete and as a person.

He describes his Mater Dei experience in one word as fulfilling, reflecting the relationships, lessons, and growth he has experienced during his time as a Monarch.

After graduation, Owen plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where he will continue his baseball career while studying communications.

Outside of school, Owen enjoys baseball, surfing, golfing, and spending time outdoors.
