Monarch of the Month: September 2025 - Joel Almazan

With a 4.18 GPA, countless hours dedicated to service, and a commitment to both academics and athletics, Joel Almazan exemplifies what it means to be a Monarch.

Joel chose Mater Dei for its outstanding academics, competitive athletic programs, and the opportunity to grow in his Catholic faith. He is a proud member of the Boys Basketball and Track teams, where he has not only developed his athletic skills but also built lifelong friendships.

When asked what Honor, Glory, and Love means to him, Joel shared: “It means always doing the right thing. It reminds me to stay humble, respect people, and live out my faith through my actions.” This guiding principle shapes how he approaches life both on and off the court.

Joel attended St. Cecilia School in Tustin before coming to Mater Dei and is a parishioner at Holy Family in Orange. His favorite part of being a Monarch has been attending sporting events and feeling the strong sense of community that makes Mater Dei so unique.

Academically, Joel is most proud of being named to the Principal’s List every semester and the personal growth he has achieved since freshman year. After graduation, he plans to attend a four-year college.

Beyond school, Joel enjoys spending time with his family, playing basketball, traveling, and being with his dogs. He also finds joy in giving back, often volunteering at his former school and through Mater Dei sports events.

Joel credits Coach Myrond Brown with having a profound impact on his high school journey: helping him grow not only as a player but also as a person.

When asked to describe his Mater Dei experience in one word, Joel chose: Transformative.
