520 HONORS BIOLOGY

UC/CSU Approved d-Laboratory Science (Course approved for extra honors credit: A=5, B=4, C=3.)
Year course open to sophomores and qualified freshmen wanting an accelerated college-preparatory laboratory science.

Prerequisites:
1. Qualifying score / grades

a. Incoming Freshman – Qualifying score on the High School Entrance Exam
b. All Others- A Qualifying score on the Honor’s Biology entrance exam AND
i. A grade of “A” in Earth Science, and
ii. A grade of “A” in Algebra I or “B” in Honors Algebra
2. Concurrent enrollment in Geometry or higher level of math

3. Signature of Science Department Instructor on Mater Dei Class Scheduling Form
This accelerated course covers biological concepts in depth, with an emphasis on higher developmental thought processes and problem solving. It includes a study of the use of the scientific method, important laboratory skills including microscopy, biochemistry, cell structure and function, cell metabolism, homeostasis, genetics, DNA biology, protein synthesis, biotechnology, virology, and bacteriology, classification, evolution, comparative animal systems, and a survey of the six Kingdoms.

NOTES: This course requires participation in animal dissections. There will be a summer assignment provided. Students who fail to meet this summer assignment requirement will be transferred to Sophomore Biology (regular college preparatory course.)

531 HONORS CHEMISTRY
UC/CSU Approved d-Laboratory Science (Course approved for extra honors credit: A=5, B=4, C=3)
Year course open to students wanting an accelerated college-preparatory laboratory science. Not available to those who have already completed Chemistry.
Prerequisites:
1. Qualifying score / grades
a. A Qualifying score on the Honor’s Chemistry entrance exam
b. A grade of “A” or better in Biology
c. A grade of “A” or better in Algebra I AND a “B” or better in Geometry (Summer school math grades may not be used to meet the eligibility requirement)
2. Signature of Science Department Instructor on Mater Dei Class Scheduling Form
This accelerated course goes into more depth and places an emphasis on higher developmental thought processes. It includes study of the basic laws of chemistry. Atomic theory, the periodic law, chemical bonding, balancing chemical equations, gas laws, stoichiometry, acids, bases, kinetics, equilibrium, and redox reactions are covered. This class includes demonstrations and accelerated laboratory exercises. This lab science course will involve lab set-up and study in class.
