Jimmy is a 1998 graduate of Mater Dei High School, is no stranger to winning. As a junior, he was part of the 1996 National Champion football team and was very successful in his first three years as a head coach. He spent four years at Los Alamitos High School where he won three State Championships and two CIF Championships. He eagerly awaits the day that this program will hang another CIF and/or State Championship banner in the beautiful Meruelo Athletic Center.
Coach Tyler Caldwell is embarking on his 4th year in the Monarch family. He received a degree in Communications Studies from CSU Long Beach where he played on the Men's Volleyball team for 4 years. During this time, he made three MPSF finals appearances and one trip to the NCAA Final Four. He was a two sport athlete at Mira Costa High School earning First Team honors in both football and volleyball. Coach Caldwell won two CIF Division 1 Volleyball Championships for the Mustangs in 2001 and 2002. Concurrently he played on two back-to-back Junior Olympic Championship teams in the 17s and 18s Open divisions. Coach Caldwell's coaching resume is just as impressive, winning back-to-back gold medals at Junior Olympics coaching boys in the 17's and 18's Open divisions in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Coach Caldwell looks forward to improving the skills of our young girls to make this season the best in school history!
The lovely Kinsey Ross is proud to start her 4th year as a Monarch. As a volleyball player in college she earned two back to back State Championships at Goldenwest Community College in 1999 and 2000 as well as earning the MVP award in 2000. Coach Ross brings years of coaching experience from both the club and college level. Coach Ross has her BA degree in Health and Fitness from Armstrong Atlantic University and her Master's degree in Education from National University. She has been coaching girls' club for 10 years. She also has three years of experience coaching at the Community College level. She attended Katella High School (class of 1999) where she played four years Varsity Volleyball and four years Varsity Soccer. In her spare time she enjoys swimming, biking, golfing and reading.
Coach Kelly Caldwell is in his first year with the Mater Dei Girls' Volleyball program. He attended Long Beach State where he played volleyball and studied Communications. At Mira Costa High School, he was 2 time captain of his volleyball team in 1999 and 2000. He has coached 4 teams to Gold Medals at the Junior Olympics, including his most recent victory in 2010 in the 15s Open division. Coach Caldwell is the older brother of Mater Dei Coach Tyler Caldwell and looks forward to being apart of the Mater Dei athletic community.
Coach Lauren Souto will be starting her first year coaching the Freshmen Red squad at Mater Dei. She has played volleyball since she was 11 and, although she may be one of the shortest volleyball players you have seen, she has a big heart and love for the game. She graduated from Mater Dei in 2006 and was fortunate enough to play all 4 years. She started on the frosh/soph as a setter and then moved onto JV and Varsity as a libero/defensive specialist. She was honored to receive the Andi Collins award her senior year and will forever have an attachment to the legacy that Mater Dei has established in her heart. She will be graduated in Sept. 2010 from UC Irvine with a bachelor's degree in anthropology. She was lucky enough to play all 4 years at UCI and, although she is very sad to be done with her volleyball career, she hopes to share passion with her players. She loves to have fun and hang out with her friends. She also can't wait to dominate with her freshman group and is super excited for season to start!
Coach Kori Johnston will be beginning her first year coaching the Monarchs. Kori began playing volleyball at age 13 and has had a passion for the game ever since. She played for the Monarchs all four years of high school as a middle blocker and won numerous awards for her positivity and her athletic drive. Kori went on to study at The University of Arizona where she also played recreational volleyball. During her time at The University of Arizona, Kori coached middle school students in Tucson, AZ and helped enrich their lives by promoting learning, teaching them self-esteem, and teaching them to compete. At the University of Arizona, Kori received a Bachelors of Science in Family Studies and Human Development. Currently, she is working on applying to accelerated nurse practitioner programs, hoping to specialize in pediatric oncology. Kori loves to travel, spend time with family and friends, and always have fun! Coach Johnston cannot wait to coach at her alma mater and be a part of the Mater Dei Monarch family once again! Go Monarchs!
