| 2014 Volleyball Banquet. The 2014 Monarch volleyball season was celebrated Tuesday, December 9th in the LeVecke Center on the Mater Dei Campus. Coach Dan O'Dell welcomed the combined team and families, and thanked the many individuals who contributed to the teams' success this year. Special thanks to Kelley Wright for leading the banquet committee, and to Tim and Theresa Coughlin for publishing and printing the great banquet program. Photos of the banquet are here. |
Monarchs Season Ends at Redondo.The Monarchs played the Redondo Union Seahawks to a five set cliff hanger match in the SoCal Regional finals on Tuesday evening, but came up just a bit shy of a tremendous upset victory. Redondo took the first two sets and seemed poised to end the match in three, but the Monarchs stormed back to take sets 3 and 4, tying the match at 2-2, and giving rise to a match-deciding final set to 15. The Monarchs were on the verge of victory several times but Redondo managed to stay in the game. Redondo finally pulled ahead at 20-18, ending the match and the Monarchs' season. Monarchs Sweep Santiago, Advance to So. Cal. CIF Region Finals. The Monarchs swept Santiago High School of Corona Saturday evening at the Meruelo Center (25-21, 25-11, 25-18) in the Southern California regional semifinals of the CIF State Championship. Mater Dei will travel to Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach for the So. Cal. finals on Tuesday evening. Monarchs Sweep Point Loma in CIF State Round 1. The Monarchs swept the Point Loma Pointers 3-0 on Tuesday evening ( 25-17, 25-19, 25-9) in the first round of the CIF State Championship. Photos of the Point Loma match are here. The second round game will be held at Mater Dei on Saturday evening at 7 pm against Santiago/Corona.  |
Monarchs Fall to Redondo Union in CIF Finals. The Monarchs lost to Redondo Union in the CIF Southern Section finals on Saturday evening at Cerritos College. Redondo won the match in four games (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20). Thanks to the many loyal Monarch fans who came out to support the team in their CIF campaign. Monarchs Advance to CIF Finals.The Monarchs will play
in the CIF Southern Section Finals on Saturday at Cerritos College,
after vanquishing Corona del Mar in the semifinals match Tuesday
evening, 25-20, 13-25, 25-16, 26-24. The Monarch cheering section once

Monarchs Beat Mira Costa in CIF Round 3. The Monarchs once again won a cliffhanger five set victory to advance in the CIF playoffs. This time they beat Mira Costa in five (25-13, 18-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12). Photos from the Mira Costa match are posted here. The Monarchs have now made it to the CIF Southern Section semifinals. They will play Corona del Mar in Newport Beach on Tuesday evening at 7pm.   |
| Monarchs Beat Los Al in CIF Round 2. The Monarchs won
a thrilling five set victory over visiting Los Alamitos on Thursday
evening to advance to Round 3 of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. The

| Monarchs Advance to CIF Round 2. The Monarchs swept visiting Millikan High School Tuesday evening 3-0 to advance to Round 2 in the CIF Southern Section playoffs. | Monarchs Close Regular Season. The Monarchs finished their regular season by beating Dana Hills 3-0 on DH's home court Wednesday evening. The JV and Frosh-Soph teams were also victorious. Photos from the Varsity match are available for viewing in the Varsity team page and here. Video highlights from Game 1 are available here. The CIF playoffs loom in the future, with brackets to be announced this Friday, November 7. The first round CIF playoff match will take place Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7pm, opponent and game location to be announced.  |
Monarchs Over Royals to Close Trinity Season. The Monarchs Varsity team beat the Rosary Royals 3-0 on Tuesday evening to close out a successful Trinity League season. The Monarchs finish the season with a 7-1 Trinity League record. The Frosh-Soph and JV teams won their matches as well, while the Frosh lost to the Royals Frosh team. The final match of the season will be a non-league match against Dana Hills on Wednesday at Dana Hills.  |
JV Team Takes Second Place in North Tournament.Congratulations to the JV team for its second place finish in the North
JV Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, November 1. Mater Dei beat
Ventura, Culver City, and North to win their pool, and then went on to
beat Redondo and Marymount before losing to Mira Costa in the finals.  Monarchs Sweep Orange Lutheran. The Varsity traveled to Orange and beat Orange Lutheran in three straight sets Monday evening before a very spirited crowd of Lancer supporters. The JV and Frosh-Soph teams were victorious as well. The Monarchs' next match is at Rosary High School on Tuesday, November 4, followed by a non-league match at Dana Hills on Wednesday, November 5, closing the regular season.  |
| Mater Dei Bests JSerra, Santa Margarita. It has been a busy and productive week for the Monarchs. They travelled to JSerra High School Tuesday evening and brought home another Trinity League victory, besting the Lions 3-0. On Wednesday, the Monarchs hosted archrival Santa Margarita for their second meeting of the year. It was a wonderful Senior Night for the Monarchs, who pulled out a thrilling five set victory over the Eagles, and seized a share of the lead in Trinity League. Congratulations to the Monarchs for this stellar victory on Senior Night. |
JV Wins Lakewood Tournament. Congratulations to the JV team and Coach Sam for their win in the Lakewood JV volleyball tournament on Saturday. After going undefeated in pool play, the Monarchs defeated Notre Dame Academy, Long Beach Poly, Los Alamitos, and the Santa Margarita on route to their victory. Well done JV! |
Monarchs Win California Challenge Tournament. On Saturday, the Monarchs defended their championship in the California Challenge Tournament hosted by Torrey Pines High School. They've now won this prestigious tournament two years in a row! Seniors Payton Chang and Brittany Welsh were selected to the All-Tournament team, and Senior Alyse Wallace-Ford was selected as the tournament MVP. En route to their championship, the Monarchs beat Bob Jones Academy, Marymount High School, and Vista Murietta. The Monarchs met Santa Margarita in the finals, and beat them in straight sets. The Monarchs beat the JSerra Lions in straight sets Thursday evening in the Meruelo Center. The Varsity, JV, Frosh-Soph and Frosh teams. The Frosh lost their match to the Pumas Frosh-Soph team. | Tournament Results. The JV and Frosh teams both placed third in volleyball tournaments last weekend. The JV placed third in the Mohs Memorial JV Tournament, while the Frosh placed third in the North Torrance Frosh Soph Tournament.
