The Mater Dei Girls Volleyball team closed its 2013 season with a banquet Tuesday evening in the LeVecke Center. The team celebrated its most successful season in recent history. The Varsity made it to the CIF Southern Section finals, and tied for third in the State Championships. The Varsity team won three tournaments, while the JV and Frosh teams won two tournaments each, and the Frosh/Soph team won one tournament. Head coach Dan O'Dell presented each Varsity team member with a certificate, congratulated Frankie Shebby, Jaden Pickell, Tess Morales, and Elise Zappia for being selected to the All Trinity League team, and presented team awards as follows:

Mater Dei Falls to Los Al in So. Cal. Finals Mater Dei made it to the Southern California Regional Finals of the CIF State Championship Tuesday evening but lost to Los Alamitos, 23-25, 16-25, 20-25, ending one of the most successful seasons for Mater Dei girls volleyball in many years. Congratulations to the Monarchs on a great season in 2013! Mater Dei Defeats Torrey Pines in Round 2 In Round 2 of the CIF State Championships, the Monarchs defeated CIF San Diego Section champion Torrey Pines Saturday evening at the Meruelo Center in Santa Ana, 20-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-22. As a result, the Monarchs will play Los Alamitos Tuesday evening in Los Alamitos. The Monarchs need all of their fans to cheer them on at Southern California final game. Mater Dei Defeats Clovis West in Round 1 The Monarchs traveled to Fresno Tuesday to face Clovis West in the first round of the CIF State Championships. The long trip proved worthwhile. The Monarchs swept Clovis West 25-18, 25-13, 25-19, for the win. The Monarchs advance to Round 2 against Torrey Pines this Saturday at the Meruelo Athletic Center in Santa Ana at 7:00. Let's all get out to support our Monarchs as the vie for the State Championship. Los Alamitos Defeats Mater Dei The Monarchs lost to Los Alamitos in the CIF Southern Section finals in four games on Saturday, November 23 at Santiago Canyon College. Playing before a standing room only crowd, the Monarchs lost the first game 23-25, but came back in the second, beating the Griffins 25-23. The Griffins won the third game 25-15. With their backs against the wall, the Monarchs nearly pulled off a fourth game comeback, but Los Alamitos managed to win the game, 25-23, and the match 3-1. It was a tough ending to a great CIF season. The Monarchs are not done yet, however. They will play in the regional round of the California high school state championship starting Tuesday, probably at home. Monarchs Defeat Great Oak, Advance to Finals Putting on a show of shows, the Monarchs beat Great Oak in five games Tuesday evening, advancing to the CIF finals on Saturday against Los Alamitos. The Monarchs got off to a slow start, losing the first game to Great Oak, 21-25. They settled down and delivered an impressive win in the second game 25-18. The third game was an absolute heart attack. The Monarchs appeared poised to win, but somehow Great Oak came back and won, 28-26. The fifth game was a solid win for the Monarchs, 25-16, leading to the fifth set victory, 15-9. Our Monarchs showed great heart in their victory against a very skilled Great Oak team. The CIF finals will be held this Saturday at Santiago Canyon College . Game time is 8:00 PM against Los Alamitos. Mater Dei will host Great Oaks Christian High School on Tuesday eveing at 7:00 p.m. at the Meruelo Athletic Center. Monarchs Sweep Huntington Beach The Monarchs Varsity girls volleyball team made it through the second round of the 2013 CIF playoffs on Thursday evening. Playing away at Huntington Beach, the Monarchs managed to sweep the Oilers 25-22, 25-17, 25-16. The win sets up a confrontation with Corona del Mar on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Newport Beach. Mater Dei's 11 senior volleyball players and their families were honored on Wednesday evening at the Meruelo Athletic Center. Seniors Jaden Pickell, Mallorie Wright, Kristin Gabriel, Sami Krakower, Kendall Kray, Halle Miller, Tess Morales, Sydney Palmer, Frankie Shebby, Elise Zappia and Taryn Donnels were first honored at a Senior Luncheon held on the Mater Dei campus, which was followed by the Senior Night pre-game festivities and match against Rosary High School. Senior Night was celebrated in true Monarch style, with victories on all levels. The Mater Dei Varsity lost to Orange Lutheran in five games on Thursday evening, 19-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 11-15. The Monarchs lost the first two games, then stormed back by winning the third and fourth games, including a thrilling 27-25 victory in the third. But the luck ran out in the fifth and final set, when the Lancers got out to an early lead and held it, all but finishing the Monarchs' hopes for a Trinity League championship. Varsity is now 4-2 in Trinity League. In the lower levels, the Monarchs fared better. The Frosh-Soph defeated OLu, 25-23, 25-15, and the JV did the same, 25-12, 25-17. The next match is against Rosary on Wednesday, October 30, when the graduating senior players will be honored on Senior Night. The Mater Dei Monarch Varsity volleyball team beat Santa Margarita on the Eagles' home court Tuesday evening, avenging the loss in their first match. The Monarchs didn't make it easy on themselves, dropping the first two games (21-25, 22-25). They came back strong in the third and fourth games (25-19 25-17), setting up the thrilling fifth set, which they won 15-13. In the lower divisions, the Monarchs swept Santa Margarita. The Frosh-Soph defeated SMHS, 25-11, 25-18. The JV also defeated the Eagles, 24-26, 25-18, 15-10. The Frosh played Fountain Valley and were also victorious, 25-17, 25-23. Congratulations to the Monarchs on a great winning night. The Mater Dei Monarchs defeated the JSerra Lions on all levels on Thursday evening. The Varsity defeated JSerra in three, 25-20, 25-17, 25-15, while the JV team beat JSerra's JV team in two games, 25-8, 25-23. The Frosh-Soph team also won in two, 25-8, 25-19. The Frosh defeated Lakewood St. Joseph 25-8, 25-11. Varsity is now 3-1 in Trinity League at the half-way mark. The next match will be away at Santa Margarita next Tuesday. The Mater Dei Monarchs traveled to Rosary High School on Monday, October 14, picking up victories on all levels. The Frosh defeated Rosary 25-8, 25-21, while the Frosh-Soph defeated Rosary 25-15, 21-25, 15-8. The JV team was also victorious, beating Rosary 25-16, 22-25, 15-13, followed by the Varsity, which defeated Rosary 25-16, 25-19, 25-20. With this win, the Monarchs are now 2-1 in Trinity League. With the Torrey Pines win, the Monarchs have won three of the four tournaments they have played in this year, having won the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament as well as the Queens Tournament. The Mater Dei Varsity volleyball team lost their first head-to-head match of the season Thursday, losing to Marymount in five games, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 12-15. In the lower divisions, the JV were victorious, beating Marymount 25-17, 25-23. The Frosh/Soph team lost their match, 21-25. The Frosh also fell to Marymount, 10-25, 13-25. Here are this week's Southern Section Division 1AA girls' volleyball rankings. 1. Mater Dei The girls varsity volleyball team played in the 2013 Dave Mohs Memorial Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday. This huge tournament features some of the best volleyball teams on Southern California. The Monarchs emerged from pool play in the Gold championship bracket and proceeded to beat Lakewood (currently #1 in Division 1AA), 25-16, 23-25, 15-10, Dana Hills, 28-26, 25-16, and Los Alamitos (currently #2 in Division 1AA), 16-25, 25-22,15-11. It was a truly thrilling day of great volleyball for the Monarchs. The Monarchs will face Redondo Union for the championships Monday night at Edison High School at 6:00 p.m. We need the Monarch Nation to come and support us on Monday! Go Monarchs! The Monarchs varsity volleyball team traveled to Corona del Mar Wednesday evening and came away with a 3-1 victory (25-19, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23). The JV and Frosh/Soph teams also both won their matches against CDM. The JV score was 25-20, 25-20; the Frosh/Soph was 25-22, 25-20. The Frosh played Long Beach Millikan and were also victorious, 25-10, 16-25, 25-10. Monarchs Down Redondo Seahawks in Season Opener The Mater Dei Varsity beat the Redondo Union Seahawks in five games on Saturday. Playing at Redondo Union, the Monarchs were strong in the first game, stunning the #2 ranked Seahawks, 25-17. The Monarchs then dropped two games in a row, (19-25, 18-25) before getting back to form, taking the fourth game, 25-12, and closing the match out in the fifth, 15-6. In the lower divisions, the JV team defeated Redondo easily, 25-12, 25-11, while the Frosh Soph earned a 2-0 victory as well, 25-22, 25-20. It was a good opening day for the Monarchs. Mater Dei Varsity Wins Queens Court Tournament The Mater Dei Varsity girls volleyball team won the Elite Varsity Division in the Queens Court Tournament on Sunday, August 25, beating Los Osos High School in the Gold Division final 2-1. Appropriately, the Monarchs received a jeweled crown trophy signifying their victory.
