Coaches



Head Varsity Coach: Adam Cutrell
Head Coach and volleyball program director Adam Cutrell begins his second year as head coach of the girls' varsity team, having coached the 2011 girls' team to the CIF semifinals. He was formerly head coach of the Ocean View High School girls' volleyball team. Adam also coached at Orange Coast College, where his teams won back to back state championships. He was formerly the director of Surf City Girls Volleyball Club in Huntington Beach. Adam also serves as head coach of the Mater Dei boys' volleyball team, which he coached to a CIF championship in 2011.



Assistant Varsity Coach: Casey Patterson
Coach Casey Patterson is a first year coach for the girls team, but he is not new to Mater Dei, having served as an assistant coach on the 2011 and 2012 Mater Dei boys' volleyball teams. Casey is a graduate of Brigham Young University where he played on the men's volleyball team. Casey has played on professional teams in Europe and Puerto Rico. He also plays professional beach volleyball, and coaches at Surf City Girls Volleyball Club.



Assistant Varsity and Frosh Gray Coach: Gary Yee
Coach Gary Yee comes to the Monarchs with a wealth of experience, having coached for nearly 30 years. He has coached at Mark Keppel High School, Cerritos Gahr High School, Maranatha High School, Azusa Pacific University, and Liberty Christian High School, where he led the girls' varsity team to its first undefeated season. He has coached club volleyball at Surf City Girls Volleyball Club in Huntington Beach. He also remains active playing on the senior circuit; his team took the bronze medal at the 2009 Senior Nationals held at Stanford University.




Junior Varsity Coach: Kasey Harwell

Coach Kasey Harwell graduated from the University of Arizona in 2007 with a degree in Optical Sciences and Engineering. He serves as Head Coach of the men’s program at Golden West College, and also serves as Director of Operations for Surf City Volleyball Club in Huntington Beach. He also was an assistant coach for the University of Arizona women’s volleyball team. Kasey was also the boys 18's Head Coach for Arizona Premier Volleyball, coming off back-to-back Silver medals in the club division at JO’s in 2011 and 2012.




Frosh-Soph Red Coach: Sam Morehouse

Coach Sam Morehouse graduated from Long Beach Wilson High School in 2007, where he was named All-CIF First Team and was chosen as an all-league player three years on a row. Sam also attended Golden West College and the University of Hawaii, where he was a member of the men's volleyball teams. During the 2012 season, Sam served as coach for the Boys Frosh Soph team.

FRANKIE SHEBBY NAMED TO ALL-COUNTY FIRST TEAM
In addition to player of the year Sara Hughes, four Monarchs were named to the 2012 All-County girls volleyball team.  Frankie Shebby was named to the first team as an outside hitter. Cheyenne Arcuri was named to the third team as a middle blocker. Jayden Pickell was named to the fourth team as an opposite. Skyler Hubler received honorable mention as an outside hitter. Mater Dei senior volleyball players Sara Hughes and Tucker Pikula were honored on Wednesday morning at the Mater Dei National Signing Day event. Sara signed a letter of intent to play beach volleyball at USC, while Tucker signed a letter of intent to play on the UCI men's volleyball team. Many members of both the boys and girls volleyball teams attended the ceremony to offer their support and congratulations to Sara and Tucker for their scholarships.

2012 VOLLEYBALL BANQUET

The Mater Dei girls volleyball team closed its season on Tuesday evening with the annual volleyball banquet. Guests enjoyed a delicious rib and chicken dinner, followed by presentation of the Varsity, JV, Frosh Soph Red, and Frosh Gray teams. Also honored were the many parents who have worked so hard to make the season a success. See photos below!

MATER DEI SWEEPS HUNTINGTON IN SECOND ROUND OF CIF PLAYOFFS

Mater Dei advanced to the third round of the CIF playoffs with a three game sweep over Huntington Beach on Thursday evening, 25-23, 25-21, 25-14. The Monarchs fell behind at the outset but slowly worked their way back to take the first game. They took control in games 2 and 3 with a balanced attack anchored by great setting from Avery Taylor, with kills from Sara Hughes (11), Skyler Hubler (9), Frankie Shebby (9), and Cheyenne Arcuri (8). Kelli Ferraro had an outstanding night of serving, with five aces and many more blistering serves that set the Monarchs up for counter-attacks. MATER DEI SWEEPS TRABUCO IN FIRST ROUND OF CIF PLAYOFFS

Mater Dei advanced to the second round of the CIF playoffs with a three game sweep over Trabuco Hills on Tuesday evening, 25-17, 25-19, 25-14. Trabuco brought along a large contingent of spirited fans, but just didn't have enough offense to march the Monarchs. The Monarchs will face the winner of the Huntington Beach-Peninsula game on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m.

CIF PLAYOFF SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

The CIF playoff brackets were announced on Saturday. Mater Dei is seeded fourth in the playoff brackets behind Los Alamitos, Marymount, and Redondo Union. In the first round, Mater Dei will face Trabuco Hills at Mater Dei on Tuesday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m.

The Frosh Soph Red team won yet another tournament over the weekend. This time they won the Kennedy Tournament, capping an undefeated Trinity League season. Congratuations to our Frosh Soph Red team for a great season!

SERVE IT UP AUCTION HITS A WINNER

The volleyball team's Serve It Up Auction was held on Thursday November 1. Guests were entertained by both silent and live auctions, a delicious catered Mexican dinner, and music by the popular Orange County group, The Tijuana Dogs. One of the highlights of the evening was the live auction of a quilt hand made by Patricia Paddock, which sold for $3,000. Thanks to the entire Mater Dei volleyball community for making this event such a great success, especially Kellie Smith and Melinda Muller, our auction chairs.

MONARCHS DEFEAT ROSARY AND WIN TRINITY LEAGUE TITLE WITH PERFECT RECORD

The Mater Dei Girls Varsity volleyball team ran the table on Tuesday evening, beating Rosary High School 3-0, and finishing their 2012 Trinity League season with a perfect 8-0 record. Rosary came into the match with nothing to lose, and they were clearly hoping to spoil the Monarchs' perfect Trinity League record. Behind the stellar hitting of Kristie Hewko, the Royals nearly took the first set, but the Monarchs pulled together when it counted, winning 26-24. The second set was even closer, with the Monarchs pulling out a 28-26 victory. The Monarchs got their groove back in the third set, winning with comparative ease, 25-16. It was an exciting finish for the Monarchs, and a great end to their Trinity League season. Congratulations to our Varsity girls and their great coaches on their Trinity League victory and perfect league season. Congratulations also to our JV, Frosh Soph and Frosh Gray teams on completing successful seasons for Mater Dei volleyball.

MONARCHS OUTPACE LANCERS 3-1 ON SENIOR NIGHT

The Monarchs played their last home game of the regular season on Thursday evening against Orange Lutheran. It was also Senior Night. Seniors Cheyenne Arcuri, Kelli Ferraro, Skyler Hubler, Sara Hughes, Avery Taylor, and Erin Hinkelman were honored along with their families before the start of the game. Congratulations to our graduating senior volleyball players!

The Monarchs won the first game, 25-21, but lost the second 21-25. They got back on track in the third game, winning 25-21 again, and closed out the match in the fourth, 25-19. Frankie Shebby had 20 kills and 17 digs. Skyler Hubler had 15 kills, while Cheyenne Arcuri had 10. Kelli Ferraro had 15 digs for the Monarchs. With Thursday's win, the Monarchs have a 7-0 record in Trinity League play. They close out the regular season next Tuesday at Rosary High School. Senior Night Video

MONARCHS ROB EAGLES' NEST 3-1

The Mater Dei Monarchs moved closer to a Trinity League championship on Thursday night with a 3-1 victory over the Santa Margarita Eagles. Facing a very spirited home court crowd, the Monarchs got off to a slow start, dropping the first set 20 - 25. The Monarchs' relentless offense took over in the second set, with kills by Cheyenne Arcuri, Frankie Shebby, Sarah Hughes, Jayden Pickell and Skyler Hubler leading the way to a three set victory blitz (25 - 19, 25 - 20, 26 - 24). It was a truly thrilling victory on the road against a very capable opponent, made all the more exciting by the vocal, supportive home crowd. The Monarchs are now 6-0 in Trinity League play. In the lower divisions, the Frosh Soph Red beat the Eagles, 25-21, 25-13, while the JV lost in two.

MONARCHS MAUL LIONS; EAGLES AWAIT

In a second battle between the big cats, the Mater Dei Monarchs were victorious in straight sets over the JSerra Lions on Tuesday night at the Meruelo Athletic Center. In the lower divisions, the JV and Frosh Soph Red teams also prevailed, and the Frosh Gray beat Pomona Catholic as well.

Tuesday's win sets up the biggest confrontation of the league season, the rematch between Mater Dei and Santa Margarita on Thursday. The Monarchs prevailed in the first league meeting in a very close match, and this next meeting has all the earmarks of a great match. The Eagles are just one game behind Mater Dei and will be looking for a win to share the lead in Trinity League. If the Monarchs prevail they should be in good position to win the league title outright. Let's all get to Santa Margarita this Thursday to support the Monarchs against the Eagles.

MONARCHS PLACE SECOND IN ASICS TOURNAMENT

The Monarchs reached the finals in the championship bracket of the ASICS California Challenge Tournament last weekend. Before losing the Marymount in the finals, the Monarchs won their pool and then beat Cathedral in the quarter-finals (25-15 25-23), and Corona del Mar in the semi-finals (25-22 25-16). Congratulations to our Varsity team on their strong performance in San Diego.

MONARCHS REIGN OVER ROYALS

The Mater Dei Monarchs earned another Trinity League victory Thursday evening, vanquishing the Rosary Royals 3-0. The Monarchs displayed the great depth of their bench against Rosary. In the lower divisions, the JV, Frosh Soph Red, and Frosh Gray all gained victories as well. Congratulations to our Monarchs on their latest Trinity League victory. MONARCHS DOWN LANCERS IN FOUR

The Mater Dei Girls Varsity volleyball team traveled to Orange Lutheran on Tuesday evening and came away with another win in Trinity League action. The Monarchs won the first set, 25-19, but lost the second to the Lancers, 16-25. Things were back on track in the fourth set, which the Monarchs won 25-15. The Monarchs closed it out in the fourth, 25-20. The Lancers were scrappy and dug the ball well, but in the end they could not hold up against the stronger Monarch offensive attack. With Tuesday's win over the Lancers, the Monarchs are now 3-0 in Trinity League play. They are at home on Thursday against Rosary.

In the lower divisions, both the Frosh Soph Red and the JV prevailed against the Lancers. The Red won in three (23-25, 25-11, 15-7), while the JV won in two (25-18, 25-20). The Frosh Gray played away at Fountain Valley and also came away with a win (23-25, 25-11, 15-8. Congratulations to the Monarchs on a full sweep of OLu and Fountain Valley! MONARCHS DEFEAT SANTA MARGARITA IN FIVE

The Mater Dei Monarchs lost the first two sets on Tuesday evening in the Meruelo Center. Then they won three in a row, snatching a victory from the visiting Santa Margarita Eagles in five games (22-25, 26-28, 25-20, 25-23, 16-14). Frankie Shebby had 27 kills, Sara Hughes had 21, and Jayden Pickell had 17. Defensively, Tess Morales had 16 digs for the Monarchs.

It was a fantastic match which nearly gave a heart attack to every varsity parent present. Game 5 will be posted on the website. Read the OC Register coverage here. The Monarchs are now 2-0 in Trinity League play, and will face Orange Lutheran on Tuesday, October 9.

In the lower divisions, the JV lost 0-2, while to Frosh Soph Red won 2-1.
