Shadow Program

Q: What is the Shadow Program?
A: The Shadow Program is designed to give your student a feel for Mater Dei life. Your student will attend classes and lunch with a Mater Dei student host. 8th graders and high school transfers may shadow on select pre-approved dates during October through May.  7th graders may shadow on select pre-approved dates during February through May.

Q: Must students know a Mater Dei student to participate?
A: If your student knows someone at Mater Dei, they are welcome to shadow him/her. Otherwise, your student will be paired with a Mater Dei student with similar interests (i.e. activities, sports). Sibling shadows are also permitted.

Q: Must students be accepted to Mater Dei before they participate in this program?
A: Acceptance is not required, however the program is reserved for prospective 7th and 8th grade students or high school students interested in transferring from another school to Mater Dei.

Q: What should visiting students wear when they Shadow?
A: The dress code for shadow students is very similar to that of the Mater Dei students:

Girls Acceptable Dress

  • Visitor's current school uniform
  • Skirt (not too short or tight)
  • Blouse
  • Dress
  • Dress pants
  • Shoes with covered toes and heels
  • Tennis shoes
Girls Unacceptable Dress
  • Denim of any kind (i.e. jeans, jean skirt)
  • Low or revealing necklines
  • Bare midriffs
  • T-shirts
  • Facial piercings (other than earrings)
  • Visible tattoos
  • Sandals, flip-flops
Boys Acceptable Dress
  • Visitor's current school uniform
  • Dress pants/shorts(i.e. khakis, Dockers)
  • Polo shirt
  • Button down shirt
  • Shoes with covered toes and heels
  • Tennis shoes
Boys Unacceptable Dress
  • Denim of any kind (i.e. jeans, jean shirt)
  • T-shirts
  • Excessively baggy attire
  • Facial piercings (other than earrings)
  • Visible tattoos
  • Sandals, flip-flops
PLEASE NOTE: Visiting students will be sent home if they do not adhere to the above dress code.

Q: How long is a typical Shadow Day?
A: You will arrive at MDHS at 8:45 am and report to the Office of Advancement to sign in your student. On a regular day, school will conclude at 2:35 pm (2:10 pm on Thursdays) and on minimum days, school will conclude at 12:00 pm. Students should be picked up/signed out in the Office of Advancement.

Q: Do visiting students need to pack a lunch?
A: You may pack a lunch or try our food service program which has an extensive menu selection.

Q: How do I sign up for a Shadow Day?
A: Click here to check the calendar for available Shadow dates. A parent or guardian should submit an online request or call (714) 850-9535 to schedule the Shadow Day.

2009-2010 Shadow Date Information
Mater Dei High School offers the Shadow Program to 8th grade students and high school transfer students during October through May and to 7th grade students during February though May. Click here for availability. The number of Shadows on campus on any given day is limited to 12. Please note that dates fill up very quickly!   Special events (ie. Masses, Spirit Rallies) scheduled on certain Shadow Days are noted on the calendar and are subject to change.


PLEASE NOTE: The Shadow Program is not to be used to visit friends for the day. The program is designed for students interested in making Mater Dei their possible high school home. Thank you for your cooperation in making this worthwhile program a success for everyone involved.
