2009 Season Recap for Boys Tennis

The Monarchs closed out the 2009 tennis season with an impressive 21-3 record. Starting the season ranked second in Orange County, the boys kept that ranking all season, losing only to University High School and Peninsula during the season. They placed fifth in the All American High School Tournament. Chris Freeman was selected to the All American All Tournament team for the second time.

The Monarchs went undefeated in league play for the second year in a row. Both Freeman and Charlie Alvarado were recognized as the OC Register’s Player of the Week this season. In the Trinity League Individual Tournament, Charlie Alvarado defeated Chris Freeman to earn his first league title. He and Chris have been in the finals the last three years. In doubles, Brian Hoang and Justin Agbayani won the Trinity League Doubles title. Evan McNerney and Trevor Zaret came in third. Alvarado, Hoang and Agbayani advanced the Round of 16s in CIF Individuals. Freeman advanced to the quarterfinals.

In team CIFs, the Monarchs defeated St. Francis, Northwood and Santa Barbara to advance to the semis for the second year in a row. In a tightly contested match, the boys lost 7-11 to the eventual Div 1 Champion Thousand Oaks.

In the final rankings, the team was ranked 2nd in Orange County and 3rd in CIF. Chris Freeman, Brian Hoang and Justin Agbayani made the OC Register 1st Team. Charlie Alvarado made the 2nd team. Chris Freeman will play in the Big 10 next year for Wisconsin-Madison. Charlie Alvarado willing be playing for the Running Rebels of UNLV.
