Learning Center
Mater Dei High School has developed a Learning Center and an Educational Achievement Program . The Muth Family Learning Center is staffed by a qualified learning specialist and a certified reading specialist. The Muth Family Learning Center Director is available for staff, parent and student training in the areas of learning issues and accommodations.

There are three programs that the Muth Family Learning Center supports:

The Educational Achievement Program (EAP) offers academic assistance and appropriate and reasonable accommodations for students with documented learning, or attention disabilities. Documentation must be in the form of a psycho-educational report generated from a licensed school, clinical or educational psychologist.

Documentation needs to be updated within a 3-5 year time period, following College Board and ACT guidelines. Note taking, peer tutoring, structured study, and open door communication are offered and monitored as needed. Teachers are informed of student needs and suggestions for classroom accommodations.

Parents, teachers, academic counselors, deans, coaches, moderators and Muth Family Learning Center staff operate as a team on behalf of EAP students. The LC director is available to consult with parents, staff, and students regarding the learning needs of any student at Mater Dei.

The Academic Assistance Program (AAP) offers free teacher tutorials to students before or after school. Students sign up for this tutoring service through their academic counselors. The Muth Family Learning Center oversees the tutoring sessions and student attendance. All major subjects are covered. If students consistently use this tutorial service, their grades improve. We ask parents to motivate their students to utilize this service.

Extended time for semester exams: 50 % extended time is offered to students in the EAP. Students with injuries or health issues are offered this extra time, as well. A list of EAP students is updated each semester and teachers are fully informed of students who would benefit from this accommodation.

Fast ForWord Program
The Muth Family Learning Center is able to offer a summer program called Fast ForWord. This program has been developed and thoroughly researched by Scientific Learning Corporation and runs daily for one hour, 5 days per week over the summer school schedule. Fast ForWord is a software program that exercises the brain through auditory, visual and motor components. The design is high school age appropriate with fun matches of sound to sight games. This program has a fee of $700 and there are scholarships available. Students have shown proven gains in reading vocabulary, comprehension, and rate via pre- and post testing. During the school year, the Fast ForWord program can be run at no cost if consistent scheduling can be arranged.
